Conference · · Trans. Am. Nucl. Soc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5547157
The concept of self-regulation implies demonstration of a dedicated commitment for aggressive pursuit of our efforts to identify and correct perceived problems. This summary illustrates such self-regulation activity on the part of Public Service Electric and Gas Co. (PSE and G) in the area of safety review management. PSE and G operates Salem 1 and 2 pressurized water reactors, and a third unit, the Hope Creek boiling water reactor, is expected to come on-line in 1986. As part of a comprehensive set of plans for improvement of Nuclear Department operations, an action plan to improve safety review management activity was undertaken to maximize the quality of reviews and the effective use of resources consistent with the need to assure safe and reliable operation of the plants. Recommendations for improvement of the safety review process included both organizational as well as procedural modifications, with the central focus being establishment of an integrated nuclear safety review program. Major elements of the implemented program are described.
