Guyed tower design and analysis. Part 1. The concept

Guyed-tower production platforms are suitable for operations in water as deep as 2000 ft. The structural system's fundamental periods (time duration of sway) are longer than the prevailing waves and wave force periods. Because structural motions and wave forces influence each other (compliant effects), most inertial forces in the tower oppose wave forces during high wave passages, decreasing the effective design forces at design sea conditions. The 16-32 guy-wire cables supporting the tower extend to pile anchors. Piles connecting the tower base to the seabed provide the needed vertical and lateral stability at the base. The guyed tower design results in a firm, weather-insensitive platform that is operationally identical to a conventional fixed structure.
