The thermal decomposition of peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) in NO-NO{sub 2}-air (or N{sub 2}) mixtures has been studied at 740 Torr of total pressure over the temperature range 283-313 K. The experimental data obtained yield a rate constant k{sub 3} for the thermal decomposition of PAN of k{sub 3} = 2.52 {times} 10{sup 16}e{sup {minus}13573/T} s{sup {minus}1} and a rate constant ratio for the reactions of the CH{sub 3}C(O)OO{sup {sm bullet}} radical with NO{sub 2} (k{sub 1}) and NO (k{sub 2}) of k{sub 2}/k{sub 1} = 1.95 {plus minus} 0.28, independent of temperature over the range 283-313 K. These data are compared and discussed with other literature data.
