Title: East Texas sees massive fracs

Journal Article · · Drilling Contract.; (United States)

Massive hydraulic treatment is routinely performed in drilling programs in the E. Texas Basin. When oil prices were lower, the tight sandstone formations in the area would not yield enough gas to cover cost of drilling or fracturing. Presently, oil prices are high enough to justify the expensive treatment. As an example, a gas well in Upshur County was drilled and subsequently fractured with Stratafrac 400 fracturing fluid and sand. Before fracturing, the well had tested 200 MCFD and 15 BPD condensate on a one-inch choke with zero flowing tubing pressure (FTP). Two months after the massive fracturing, the well flowed at the rate of 1435 MCFD and 70 BPD condensate with 900 psi FTP on an 8/64-in. choke. Other successful fracturing operations also are mentioned. Modern fracturing treatments are described as being designed to fracture larger intervals with more fluid and sand and shorter pumping times.
