Health and safety hazards in synfuel technologies

Journal Article · · Energy Prog.; (United States)

The development of independent, long-term sources of energy and critical raw material supply has become an economic and political necessity during the past decade as readily available domestic oil reserve is depleting and the world energy supply situation is becoming more unpredictable. Conversion of coal and oil shale to synthetic fuels, however, will be accompanied by a myriad of environmental and health problems. Even through available control technologies will be installed to control residual release, and many work practices will be implemented to reduce hazard exposure, occupational health and safety hazards are still potentially a significant problem associated with a synthetic liquid fuel facility. Potential hazards in oil-shale processing, e.g., fire, explosion, and exposure to toxic and carcinogenic material are discussed.
