High spin states of various nuclei have been observed using the techniques of ..gamma.. -ray spectroscopy. These states were populated with heavy-ion fusion-evaporation type reactions. In particlular the /sup 40/Ca(/sup 28/Si,X) reactions were used at beam energies of 93.5 and 102 MeV. Five different reactions have been observed and their relative production yields have been measured. These reactions are ..cap alpha..2p, 3p, 4p, 2pn, and 3pn leading to the nuclei /sup 62/Zn, /sup 65/Ga, /sup 64/Zn, /sup 65/Ge, and /sup 64/Ga respectively. Gamma rays from these nuclei have been studied using Ge(Li) detectors. The measurements performed with these detectors include ..gamma..-..gamma.. coincidence measurements, ..gamma..-ray angular distributions, delayed activity measurements using a beam chopper, neutron-..gamma.. and neutron-..gamma..-..gamma.. coincidence measurements. /sup 62/Zn proved to be the most fruitful nucleus to study. Several new states were observed including ones at 4905 keV, 6082 keV, 7423 keV and 8584 keV. These states have probable spins of 7, 9, 11, and 12. We have compared our data with the predicitions of the cluster-vibration model and a band-mixing Hartee-Fock model. Rotational or quasi-rotational bands predicted by these models are observed in our data. New data on two other nuclei were obtained with the /sup 40/Ca + /sup 28/Si reactions. These are /sup 65/Ga and /sup 64/Ge. Very little has been published about these nuclei. Only the ground state was known for /sup 65/Ge. We have constructed a possible decay scheme with states as high as 5207 keV and spins up to 23/2. The ground state band has been compared to the predictions of the rotational particle coupling (RPC) model. For /sup 64/Ga we were able to make spin suggestions of J=4 for two previously observed states at 537 keV and 707 keV.
