Organic materials with non-linear optical properties are of interest because of their potential use in optical switching, telecommunications, and optical computers. One compound that is known to be useful is 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)3-acetamidonitrobenzene, frequently called DAN. Only a limited number of derivatives of DAN have been reported. The authors have synthesized a series of derivatives of DAN with a series of monosubstituted amines in place of the dimethylamino group.
