During the last decade the non-linear optical properties of organic molecules have become of interest because of their possible use in optical switching, telecommunications, and optical computing. One compound that has drawn particular interest is N-(4-nitrophenyl)-N-methylaminoacetonitrile, commonly known as NPAN. The authors have used the Strecker reaction to produce NPAN in good yield and high purity. Using this route, a series of NPAN derivatives are being synthesized based on the N-alkyl-4-nitrobenzeneamine compounds synthesized by the research group. These compounds are expected to have superior non-linear optical properties.
