The Turlock Irrigation District (TID) has harnessed a 17-foot water drop in its prinicpal irrigation canal to power two 500-kilowatt generators. The eight-month irrigation season will provide power during the region's peak electrical demand for air conditioning. The economics for exploiting low-head hydroelectric power did not develop in this country until fuel costs began to rise. While inadequate for total energy needs, these projects are a step toward energy independence. An extensive feasibility study preceded TID's choice of two sites for low-head hydro development. Much of the engineering and construction work was done in-house to cut cots. TID reserves are financing the project. (DCK)
