The independent design review (IDR) is a required part of the licensing process for near-term operating license (NTOL) plants and also is becoming a required part of the continuing licensing review process for operating plants. This paper presents a summary of the Plant Vogtle IDR process and results and provides recommendations for future IDRs based on the experience gained from this review. An IDR of the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant (VEGP) Unit 1 was conducted by Stone and Webster Engineering Corporation (SWEC) as part of the Georgia Power Company (GPC) readiness review program. The purpose of this review was to provide additional operational readiness assurance to GPC management in support of the VEGP Unit 1 operating license.
