Dry scrubbing of MSW incinerator flue gas by spray dryer absorption: New developments in Europe

Conference · · Proc., Annu. Meet., Air Pollut. Control Assoc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5533653
The public awareness of environmental issues is still increasing in Europe. Recycling of materials are continuing in various programs, even though the first ones did not meet expectations. New and more efficient incinerators are being planned and existing incinerators are being retrofited with state of the art gas cleaning equipment. Discussions on dioxins and furanes goes on based on new results on high gas phase fractions in the flue gases also after wet scrubbing. Data from ambient air show high fractions of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, and Hg) in gas phase and on fine particulate when new immission measurement techniques are applied. Guidelines are set in Europe not only for acid gas and particulate emission, but also for heavy metals and organics, in particulate, as well as in gas phase, in Germany and Switzerland, and similar regulations are under preparation in other countries. Regulations for secondary pollutants are being enforced and made more extensive.
