The banning of urea formaldehyde foam insulation by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) was prompted by laboratory tests linking formaldehyde gases that are released when the sun heats the building's exterior and as the product cures to cancer - as well as by consumer complaints of adverse physical reactions. The restriction applies only to home and school applications, but since these represent 90% of sales, the ruling is expected to wipe out the foam business. The release of formaldehyde gases is generally due to improper installation, but no voluntary standard was felt to be possible. Building owners will be looking at alternative insulating materials, especially blown materials. (DCK)
