Primary reactions in x-irradiated single crystals of the two crystal modifications of myo-inositol have been investigated by ESR and pulse radiolysis. Two primary radicals have been determined by ESR at 77 K, the alkoxy radical and the hydroxyalkyl radical, and trapped electrons have been observed at 4.2 K in the hydrated crystal of myo-inositol. The kinetics of the trapped electron have been determined with pulse radiolysis. The alkoxy radical is bleachable with visible light, but the signal in anhydrous myo-inositol recovers when the light is switched off.
