The Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory is developing a {sup 99m}Tc production system based on distributed electron accelerators for production of the parent {sup 99}Mo isotope. In this system, {sup 99}Mo is produced from {sup 100}Mo by a photo-neutron reaction. The specific activity produced is low, {approximately}1 Ci/g, compared with {approximately}10000 Ci/g for {sup 99}Mo produced in nuclear reactors by fissioning highly enriched uranium targets. Consequently, separation of technetium from molybdenum using standard alumina columns is impractical. This low specific activity requires the development of a compact separation process that can realize high separation efficiency with quantitative recovery of high-activity concentration {sup 99m}Tc product in isotonic saline solution.
