NRC efforts in the implementation of the new source term
- Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC (United States)
In 1962, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission published TID-14844, {open_quotes}Calculation of Distance Factors for Power and Test Reactors.{close_quotes} Since then licensees and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) have used the accident source term presented in TID-14844 in the evaluation of the dose consequences of design basis accidents (DBAs). However, more than a decade of research has led to an enhanced understanding of the timing, magnitude, and chemical form of fission product releases following nuclear accidents. The results of this work have been summarized in NUREG-1465, {open_quotes}Accident Source Terms for Light-Water Nuclear Power Plants,{close_quotes} which was published in February 1995. Application of this new knowledge to operating reactors could result in cost savings without sacrificing real safety margin. In addition, safety enhancements may also be achieved.
