Precision spectroscopy of the n-italicf-italic triplet Rydberg states of H/sub 2/ and determination of the triplet ionization potential

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
Several triplet Rydberg f-italic states in molecular hydrogen were observed with a resolution of about 50 MHz under stepwise excitation. Extrapolation of the energy intervals to the Rydberg series limit gives a precise value for the ionization energy for H/sub 2/ relative to the lowest triplet bound state, the c-italic(2p-italic) /sup 3/Pi/sub u/ state, and an improved value for the ionization potential of the H/sub 2/ molecule in the ground state. The new value for the ionization potential is in excellent agreement with a-italicb-italic i-italicn-italici-italict-italici-italico-italic calculations and confirms the Lamb shift in the ground state of H/sub 2/.
