Measurement of the total cross section for interaction of rho/sup 0/ mesons with intranuclear nucleons in. pi. /sup -/C interactions at 5 GeV/c-italic

We report a study of the coherent production of rho/sup 0/ mesons in ..pi../sup -/C interactions at 5 GeV/c-italic. We have measured total cross sections for interaction with intranuclear nucleons of unpolarized rho/sup 0/ mesons sigma( rho/sup 0/N-italic) = 25/sup +11//sub -9/ mb and of longitudinally polarized rho/sup 0/ mesons sigma/sub L-italic/( rho/sup 0/N-italic) = 23/sup +14//sub -11/ mb. Analysis of the data on the cross sections for rho/sup 0/N-italic interactions in the interval 2.6--6.8 GeV indicates that these cross sections are independent of the helicity of the rho/sup 0/ mesons.
