Wireline workover: a cost-saving expense

Journal Article · · Offshore; (United States)

Wireline-oriented workover techniques, in which certain remedial or recompletion work is done without the need for removal of production tubing from a well, have been a most essential feature in the maintenance and rejuvenation of offshore oil and gas wells. Today, electric wire-line services are in many cases able to offer a complete workover capability. In short, through the use of their specially developed tools, wire-line contractors can provide substantial savings in well downtime and equipment rental. In other cases, they are able only to serve as diagnosticians, and while they can point out accurately a number of conditions that rob production, the remedy may call for more drastic measures--and a greatly increased cost if a complete workover rig is needed.
