DOE new-building guidelines tougher than ASHRAE's

DOE's new guidelines for the energy performance of new buildings will cause some changes in state building codes if they are adopted by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). The DOE guidelines are more stringent than the ASHRAE-90 standard, and could increase building efficiency by 30%. The lighting industry argues that DOE's 25% reduction of lighting power budgets could compromise the quality of work, but DOE counters that current lighting recommendations by the lighting industry are too high. The rules will be mandatory for federal and voluntary for private buildings. (DCK)
