Cost of electricity in major cities compared

Journal Article · · Public Power; (United States)
OSTI ID:5514340
The American Public Power Association's first comparison of basic electricity costs (as of January 1, 1983) in 30 major US cities reveals that lowest residential costs are in three cities served by municipally owned systems and the highest are in 10 cities served by investor-owned utilities. Three cities are served by both public and private utilities. Only one of nine public systems obtains more than one-third of its power from hydroelectricity. Two cities receive all of their power from TVA, which is primarily coal-fired generation. Lowest costs are in Seattle with 1.6 cents/kWh and highest in New York City with 13.7 cents/kWh. 2 tables.
