Thorough advanced planning will help a utility handle an emergency situation involving a gas outage to an area. The planning should include (1) organizing personnel to cover specific responsibilities, (2) selecting possible control centers, (3) establishing an emergency notification procedure, (4) preparing name/address/telephone lists of relevant city officials (particularly police and fire departments) and news media, (5) determining the emergency items needed and where available, (6) presenting the plan to all supervisory personnel, and (7) familiarizing key personnel with their assigned functions.
