Electrofission of heavy nuclei

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:5512227
Distorted wave methods are used to study the electrofission of heavy nuclei (/sup 238/U and /sup 232/Th). The effects of nuclear charge and size are presented. Because some quantities are the result of the interference of many partial waves, it is necessary to have matrix elements with a precision of 1/10/sup 7/. The presence of the giant quadrupole resonance in the electrofission of /sup 238/U is confirmed. In the near-threshold electrofission of /sup 238/U a small number of transition states may be responsible for the observed structure in the angular distribution of fission fragments. The angular distribution of /sup 232/Th fission fragments for both e/sup -/ and e/sup +/ is reproduced.
