Title: FISSION STUDIES USING LOW ENERGY CHARGED PARTICLES

The charged particle induced fission of Th/sup 232/ and U/sup 238/ was studied using a tandem Van de Graaff. The maximum particle energies was 12 Mev. Fission excitation functions for the reactions Th/sup 232/ + p, U/sup 238/ + p, Th/sup 232/ + d, and U/sup d were determined in the region of the coulomb barrier. The excitation functions were fitted to a curve of barrier transmission coefficients and possible explanations are offered for the anomalously high barrier heights obtained. The peak to valiey ratios of the kinetic energy spectrum of the fission fragments were measured as a function of proton energy using p-n junction counters. A plot of the ratios as a function of proton energy shows a general decrease in the ratio of asymmetric to symmetric fission as the energy is increased, with the exception of three upward breaks in each curve. In the bombardment of Th/sup 232/ the breaks occurred at 7.70, 9 50, and 11.25 Mev and in the bombardment of U/sup 238/ they occurred at 6.8, 8.5, and 10.60 Mev. The largest break occurred at the lowest energy and was attributed to the threshoid for the (p,nf) reaction. The position of the break is in agreement with previousiy reported data. The two smaller breaks at higher energiese are attributed to the (p,2n) and the (p,p'n) thresholds. This is based on the postulation that the onset of any new exit channel from the compound system will compete predominately with symmetric fission, Finally, measurements were made of the angular distributions of the fission fragments from the reactions; Th/sup 232/ + p and U/sup 238/ + p. A new type of scattering chamber is described in which the measurements were made, Using Griffen's method, values of the parameter K were determined in the energy region of 5 to 7 Mev above fission threshold.
