The first known observation of tunable, VUV-stimulated emission by anti-Stokes Raman scattering is reported. A metastable I* (5p/sup 5/ /sup 2/P/sup 0//sub 1/2/) population inversion is created with respect to the I ground state by selective photodissociation of NaI. With a 206-nm pump laser to drive the Raman process, anti-Stokes Raman-laser radiation at 178 nm was generated with a pulse energy of 35 ..mu..J and was tunable over 10 cm/sup -1/.
