In this article the authors detail their experience designing and manufacturing the Cray X-MP supercomputer. Included herein are discussion on: the performance-related issues which guided the processor design; the issue of design and manufacturing compatibility with the Cray-1 supercomputer; architectural concerns; and system testing.
