Beam losses in the storage ring due to charge chaging collisions within a beam of Xe/sup +/ ions

Employing the cross-beams technique we have measured absolute cross sections both for electron capture (sigma/sub c/) and for ionization (sigma/sub i/) in collisions between two Xe/sup +/ ions in the center-of-mass energy range from 8.7 keV to 54.7 keV. The resulting beam loss cross section sigma/sub L/ = 2(2sigma/sub c/+sigma/sub i/) increases with collision energy from 1 x 10/sup -16/ cm/sup 2/ to 7 x 10/sup -16/ cm/sup 2/. Taking into account the design parameters of the heavy ion fusion scenario HIBALL, the beam loss due to ion-ion collisions in the storage ring can be estimated to be approx. =6 per cent.
