Coarse components in the charge, i.e. >6 mm material, display higher ash, a lower volatile matter and a smaller proportion of caking components. Bulk density and moisture levels were studied over a wide range of size reductions (60-85% <3 mm) and moisture (1.2 - 10%). Increased size reduction is linked to an increase in bulk density, though the connection with moisture is less clear due to the close-packing effect of the molecular forces in 5-12% moisture charged material. Increased <3 mm size in the charge gave higher yields of both general metallurgical and blast furnace coke. Laboratory work should be checked in practical runs working with 74-76% <3 mm charge material.
