Detection and identification of failures in PWR pressurizer instrumentation using generalized likelihood ratios

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5499549

A method for detecting and identifying failures in the sensors of a pressurized water reactor (PWR) pressurizer is described and evaluated. The generalized likelihood ratio (GLR) technique is used to perform statistical tests on the innovations sequence of a Kalman filter state estimator. By this approach, one can determine when a failure occurs, identify the failed sensor, and estimate the failure magnitude. The GLR technique can also distinguish between instrument failures and sudden changes in the pressurizer dynamics. Simulation results and actual pressurizer data are used to demonstrate the capabilities of the GLR method.
