Monte Carlo study of compact U(1) four-dimensional lattice gauge theory

Expectation values of the specific heat and of Wilson loops are presented for compact U(1) gauge theory on 4/sup 4/, 5/sup 4/, and 6/sup 4/ lattices, calculated by averages over up to 7500 iterations through the lattice generated by Monte Carlo methods. The calculations show clear evidence for a single second-order phase transition.
