A passive solar heated house near Aspen, CO, utilizes a system of heat recirculation and storage, thermal mass, and natural air movement. The thermal mass is provided by an insulated concrete slab and a central stone wall while storage is 4-inch hollow core concrete block covered by a 4-inch concrete slab. Insulation levels are R-38 in the ceilings and R-19 in the walls, insulating blinds are used on the windows which are double glazed. Backup heating is provided by electric baseboard heating and a wood burning stove, the latter was not required for heating after February of the first winter. The house cost $35/ft/sup 2/ to construct.
