Summit House is a new passive solar home built on an 8000 degree day site northern New Hamsphire. It is heated by the sun passing through south facing windows, an attached greenhouse with a connecting mass wall, and a centrally located woodstove. The north wall and part of the west wall are constructed of concrete and are buried in the earth. The remainder of the house is 2'' x 6'' frame construction. The walls have been insulated to R22 and the ceiling to R30. Thermal mass is provided by the greenhouse connecting wall and a concrete slab floor. The slab floor is insulated from the frost walls by 2'' of rigid polyurethane foam. The frost walls are insulated on the inside with 2'' of polystyrene foam so that the slab and the earth under it are thermally isolated from the surroundings. During the 1979-1980 winter the heat from the sun was supplemented by burning three cords of wood.
