Sola-rolls into Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains

SolRoll collectors, composed of the flexible, synthetic elastomer ethylene-propylene diene, were used in a solar swimming pool heating application in Pennsylvania. The collectors are mounted on the south side of a 5-ft fence surrounding the 50,000 gal. pool and utilize the existing filter pump. A low-cost plastic pool cover reduces heat losses due to evaporation. Headers on the SolRol collectors are paired vertically on one side and tube-in-mat segments run horizontally the full 70 ft length. This configuration permits a return loop system to pass water back to the header side in a counter-flow pattern and improves the overall efficiency in a collector of this length. The system, which cost $4.35/ft/sup 2/ installed, maintains the pool water at 84-86/sup 0/F and extends the swimming season from May through September.
