The Generic NO{sub x} Control Intelligent System (GNOCIS) is an on-line enhancement to existing digital control systems (DCS) that results in reduced NO{sub x} emissions from fossil fuel fired boilers while meeting other operational constraints on the unit (principally rate and other regulated emissions). The core of this system is a model of the NO{sub x} generation characteristics of the boiler that reflects both short- and long-term shifts. The software applies an optimizing procedure to identify the best set points for the plant which are implemented automatically without operator intervention (closed-loop), or, at the plants discretion, conveyed to the plant operators for implementation PowerGen, The Southern Company, U.K. Department of Trade and Industry, and US Department of Energy. This paper provides a general overview of the technology and results from testing at several demonstration locations.
