Progress report on the development and demonstration of the Generic NO{sub x} Control Intelligent System (GNOCIS)

The objective of the Generic NO{sub x} Control Intelligent System (GNOCIS) project is to develop an on-line enhancement to existing digital control systems (DCS) that will result in reduced NO{sub x} emissions from coal-fired boilers while meeting other operational constraints on the unit (principally heat rate and other regulated emissions). The core of the system will be a model of the NO{sub x} generation characteristics of the boiler that will reflect both short- and long-term shifts. The software will apply an optimizing procedure to identify the best set points for the plant which will be implemented automatically without operator intervention (closed-loop), or, at the plants discretion, conveyed to the plant operators for implementation (open-loop). The GNOCIS project is being funded by a consortium consisting of the Electric Power Research Institute, PowerGen, The Southern Company, U.K. Department of Trade and Industry, and US Department of Energy. This paper provides a general overview of the technology and results from prototype testing at Alabama Power Company`s Plant Gaston Unit 4, a 250 MW wall-fired unit, and PowerGen`s Kingsnorth Station Unit 1, a 500 MW tangentially-fired unit.
