Hydro generating units totaling 2,000 MW of capacity, part of the 10,300-MW LaGrande complex on James Bay, Quebec (Fig 1), are now linked over high-voltage dc lines to a converter terminal close to Boston, Mass. Testing of the ac/dc converter terminals this spring and summer will complete years of negotiations and construction. The negotiations were successfully culminated as the technologies needed for dc bulk-power transmission were refined and several technical concerns solved.
