CAD - a circumferential acoustical device for well logging

A description is given of a new acoustical logging tool developed for use as a detector of vertical fractures. The device employs ultrasonic transmitters and receivers mounted on wall-contacting pads and positioned along the circumference of the borehole wall. The CAD differs from these in that the transmitters and receivers are cylinders several wavelengths long and, thus, are substantially directional with respect to the axis of the tool, while exhibiting an omnidirectional characteristic in azimuthal directions. 6 refs.
