One of the more modern borehole logging methods for the delineation of vertical fractures makes use of acoustic waves propagating circumferentially along the borehole wall. Logging tools developed by both Shell (CAD - circumferential acoustic device) and Schlumberger (CMT - circumferential microsonic tool) employ 4 arms, each containing piezo-electric transducers. One pair of transducers on opposite arms acts as transmitters of ultrasonic waves, whereas the other pair acts as receivers. In an open (near-) vertical fracture intersecting the borehole in any quadrant gives rise to strong wave attenuation. Hence, consistent anomalous differences between acoustic amplitudes in the 4 quadrants over some depth may be interpreted as indications of the presence of such fractures. Theoretical studies on circumferential wave propagation and field testing of the CAD are discussed.
