Competitive losses by US industry prompted hearings on three bills designed to improve US manufacturing and employ a larger work force. Twelve witnesses representing the manufacturing sector, universities, labor organizations, and government agencies examined the recent drop in manufacturing jobs and manufactured goods. Their concern was for the underlying causes of this decline and whether government policies to support technological innovation could reverse the situation. (DCK)
