During normal operation, protection systems are on standby and possible failure of system components may therefore go undetected. Their ability to function as intended, should they be initiated after a long period of time, is thus questionable. For this reason, French as well as international rules require that protection systems be subjected to periodic tests. Because of the equipment available when the units in the French 900-MW(electric) series were designed, the instrumentation and control systems were equipped with manual periodic test systems. This was the case with the reactor protection system (RPS) periodic test equipment where the manual procedures relied on the manipulation of a large number of switches and push buttons. This manual test equipment has been successfully replaced on the 28 units in the French 900-MW(electric) series by the automatic tester discussed in this paper.
