Room-temperature-stable, F/sub 2//sup +/-like center yields cw laser tunable over the 0. 99--1. 22-. mu. m range

A newly explored color center in NaF, when pumped with 1 W of power at 0.87 ..mu..m, has yielded efficient cw laser action tunable over the 0.99--1.22-..mu..m range; power output at band center was 400 mW. The combined ground- and first-excited-state absorption spectrum of this center is closely analogous to that of the ordinary F/sub 2//sup +/ center in the same host. However, unlike the (short-lived) ordinary F/sub 2//sup +/ center, the new center has a measured shelf life at room temperature of several months.
