Pressure-induced metallic and superconducting state of GaSe

Using a sintered-diamond-tipped opposed anvil apparatus and a cryogenic clamp press, the electrical resistance behavior of GaSe was investigated. It is found that GaSe becomes metallic for pressures over 250 kbar and superconducting at temperatures around 5 K. The superconducting transition temperature is not very sensitive to the applied pressure: dT/sub c//dP is approximately -0.0018 K/kbar in the pressure range 250--400 kbar.
