Offshore jackup drilling rigs are subject to heavy loads, imposed by machinery, men, and supplies as well as the environment itself. A direct-acting hydraulic jacking system provides a safe and efficient method to ensure that a jackup can withstand the expected loads. This paper discusses the jacking system's design and operation including the raising and lowering operational procedures, major component function and selection, and inherent and design safety features.
