Modern industrial plants (especially in the chemical sector) inevitably give rise to waste products. The coking industry at its present technological level produces a wide variety of wastes, which from one point of view are responsible for polluting the environment and from another represent a wastage of raw materials. An integrated program for devising a non-waste-producing coking plant must include the features outlined: (1) The basic objective is to close the processing cycles with reference to solid and liquid organic wastes and a proportion of the effluents and gaseous discharges (with intermediate cleaning operations). (2) Conditions and flowsheets must be devised to eliminate or reduce the formation of wastes. (3) Gaseous products which are still discharged to the atmosphere must be purified to the level required by the health regulations (allowing for the dilution effects in specific industrial localities. (4) Residual effluents must be decontaminated to a level permitting their discharge outside the plant for further processing after mixing with other effluents (from industrial plants and urban sewage systems). (5) Useful materials must be developed on the basis of solid and liquid wastes. Many items in this program have already been realized. Ways have also been found for exploiting some of the chemical wastes (to make roadbuilding materials, fuel mixtures, etc.). Developmentsare well advanced towards the closure of some waste cycles within the coking plant. Methods have been developed and are being introduced for decontaminating much of the gaseous waste from apparatus in the crude benzol rectification shop and the naphthalene-contaminated wastes from tar distillation apparatus etc., before it is discharged to atmosphere.
