The authors investigate the influence of the quantity and morphology of nonmetallic inclusions on the characteristics of fracture resistance and determination of the internal interfaces on which fracture of cast steels occurs. The sharpangled nonmetallic inclusions in the unmodified 20GFL steel used weaken the primary austenitic grain boundaries and are centers of the crack origin. Globularization and refinement of the nonmetallic inclusions, a decrease in the quantity of them, and the increase in the dispersion of the dendritic structure in the steel deoxidized with calcium silicide or melted with the use of prereduced pellets cause an increase in the strength of the primary austenitic grain boundaries. Crack origin is difficult at such boundaries, and as the result the impact strength of 20GFL steel increases.
