MNC's and the EC: what's the future for multinationals in Europe. [Political aspects]

International firms are responding differently to the trends of European economic integration and intervention which are emerging from the former cohesion of the Common Market. Some intervention, as in the steel and textile industries and anti-dumping legislation is welcome, but American companies are very wary of a cartel-type relationship. Recent business-targeted rules issued by the European Community (EC) are of concern to both European and American multinationals because they go beyond employment protection and corporate disclosure to issues of corporate liability and employee-information secretariats. Many of EC's initiatives are seen as an attempt by a politically-motivated trade union movement to control multinational companies and establish a headquarters in Brussels that will rival Washington, Economic recessions in the 1970s gave this movement the opportunity to press decision makers for new rules. The corporations are making a basically organizational response, setting up monitoring offices and lobbying efforts. They see a greater role for a governmental affairs function within the companies.
