Title: Properties of solid-solution single crystals in HfO/sub 2/-Ln/sub 2/O/sub 3/ systems (Ln = Y, Rare Earths)

Journal Article · · Inorg. Mater. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5473806

The authors show that for solid solution single crystals in HfO/sub 2/-Ln/sub 2/O/sub 3/ (Ln=Y, Gd, Tb, Er, Yb), the unit cell parameter, refractive index, and thermal expansion coefficient increase with increase in concentration and atomic number of the stabilizing rare earth oxide. The dependence of the density and microhardness of the single crystals on composition has an inversely proportional character, due to the complicating effect of the identity of the specific rare earth oxide.
