Title: Isolation and study of polycyclic naphthenes from high-boiling petroleum fractions

Journal Article · · Pet. Chem. USSR (Engl. Transl.); (United States)

The efficiency was shown of obtaining isoparaffin and naphthene hydrocarbon concentrates from high-boiling (>400/sup 0/) petroleum fractions by complex-formation with thiourea from homogeneous phase. Polycyclic naphthene hydrocarbons may be separated by complex formation with thiourea, followed by adsorption chromatography on alumina. Using a complex system of separation, mass-, chromato-mass-spectrometry and capillary GLC it was shown that polycyclic naphthene hydrocarbons of Koturdepe petroleum (400 to 500/sup 0/ fraction) among those forming a complex with thiourea are mainly represented by 5-..cap alpha..-cholestane and 5-..cap alpha..-ergostane, while hydrocarbons from those which do not form a corresponding complex are pentacyclic hydrocarbons of hopane and morethane series. Distribution of polycyclic naphthene hydrocarbons in fractions obtained by adsorption chromatography on Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ indicates that they may be further separated according to molecular weight and chemical structure. 2 figures, 3 tables.
