Gas chromatographic determination of cyclopentyl-cyclohexyl naphthene splits by carbon number in the gasoline boiling range

Journal Article · · J. Chromatogr. Sci.; (United States)

Gas chromatographic determination of cyclopentyl-cyclohexyl naphthene splits by carbon number in the gasoline boiling range was accomplished by preliminary separation of the sample into total saturates, aromatics, and olefins by ASTM D-1319. Analysis of the saturate fraction with a 13X molecular sieve adsorption column yielded a C/sub 3/-C/sub 11/ carbon number distribution in which each carbon number was separated into three peaks: naphthenes, isoparaffins, and n-paraffins. A portion of the saturate fraction was dehydrogenated over platinum-coated alumina, only the cyclohexyl naphthenes being sensitive to this treatment, and then analyzed by gas chromatography over the 13X molecular sieve. The aromatic dehydrogenation products were separated and analyzed on a N,N-bis(2-cyanoethyl) formamide column in series with the 13X column. The repeatability and selectivity of the technique were demonstrated by comparison with analyses of a known blend of cyclohexyl and cyclopentyl naphthenes. Gem-disubstituted cyclohexyl naphthenes and large amounts of dicycloparaffins caused errors.
