At LLNL microchannel plate (MCP) detectors of x-rays have been in use for several years. The voltage is applied by a coating on the MCP which needs to be thick enough that the propagation losses are small. To enhance the gain loss of a thick Au coating CsI is used to enhance the gain and quantum efficiency of the MCP. We have recently discovered that thick coatings of CsI (2 {mu}m) in both the front and back side of the MCP (normal to bias angle) greatly increases the gain. 5 refs., 7 figs.
