In recent years the problem of seismic behavior of liquid storage tanks has become one of increasing importance due to numerous failures of such systems. The present investigation considers the case of a right circular cylindrical shell (with vertical axis) situated on a rigid slab. The shell is reinforced with circumferential rings which may carry initial forces. Further, the shell is filled with a perfect liquid to an arbitrary depth. An energy formulation is used in conjunction with the finite element method to develop equations of motion for the liquid-elastic shell system. Response of the system subjected to horizontal seismic motion is investigated by modal analysis.
